HELP! My Body is C-H-A-N-G-I-N-G!
Welp, you knew it was going to happen, and the time is finally come for our kiddos to start growing up. Growing up means more responsibility, freedom, changes to their social networks and more importantly, their bodies. Those parents who have older children know how interesting this process is and feel somewhat prepared for questions to start coming from their younger children. Whereas, there are parents who are going through this for the first time and the "deer in headlights" gaze is affixed on their faces when the questions start flowing. Puberty is a wonderful and sometimes frightening time in our kids lives.
When the "Puberty: The Wonder Years Unit" begins (probably after Spring Break), students will be homework 5 to 10 minute discussions with parents/guardians/trusted-loved ones about various aspects of puberty. (No written responses are needed, just talk!) Students will be given questions to prompt discussions; these questions vary from "What were you like when you were my age"?" to "How should I take care of my body when __________?"
This will be your opportunity to open the door for questions now and for the future when they are in middle/high school. They are looking for guidance in this "weird" time and you, as the parent/guardian, are the expert in their minds. Yes, this may make you and them squirm, but they appreciate your help!!!! (Really, they do!)
Our classroom will be completely safe and respectful environment for discussion on approved topics by Kalamazoo Public Schools and the State of Michigan. Please feel confident that students will be separated by gender for specific topics and that I have been certified to teach the material to our 5th graders. I have the utmost respect for your child and with the approved curriculum, help them understand what is happening to them now and in the future.
